COURSE OUTLINE

Class 1: Discuss materials. View images of famous pastel landscapes and discuss drawing principles: line, shape, form, depth, perspective, composition, value. Learn to use layering and shading to achieve luminous surfaces. Using a photograph, create a monochromatic landscape.

Class 2: View works of Claude Monet. Demonstration on creating value and depth on the picture plane. Create a landscape from a photograph using complimentary colors. Learn about arbitrary color.

Class 3: Work on location, weather permitting. Learn to create light within a compositional setting. Learn how to use warm and cool colors. Composition from landscape using naturalistic color.

Class 4: Work on location, weather permitting. Create a drawing that demonstrates atmospheric perspective and light. See examples of famous landscapes that use these techniques.

Class 5: Work from photo reference depicting a season of the year that you have never drawn or painted before. Explore your creativity. Focus on the creation of dynamic perspective within the compositional setting.

Class 6: Work on location, weather permitting. Choose a unique compositional format. Final critique at the end of class.

Course Description

Create luminous drawings that capture light and atmospheric perspective with pastels. You will learn how to create compositionally dynamic drawings and how different color schemes affect the mood of the drawing. Your goal is to develop a strong sense of form and composition.

SUPPLIES Minimum of 12 hard, soft, or oil pastels (suggested colors: cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, gray, moss gray, lawn green, forest green, orange lead, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, brown ochre, burnt sienna, purple blue, ruby red, cream or white Canson Mi-Tientes paper, 6 or more 12x16 sheets in pastel or earth tones Artist Tape, Graphite drawing pencil, Kneaded eraser, 9x12 sketchpad optional, 18x24 drawing board with clips for traveling on location, Pastel fixative, permanent or workable
